Enrique Leira MD MS is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Dr. Leira is board-certified in Neurology and Vascular Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has formal training in Epidemiology and clinical research methods. He is a Vascular Neurologist at the University of Iowa Comprehensive Stroke Center. Dr. Leira is also an amateur radio operator and a private pilot.

His research interests at OPL include the interface between aerospace, electronic monitoring and acute brain injury. He is an expert in the inter-hospital transport by helicopter of stroke patients from a small community hospital to a large tertiary center. This is very relevant setting for stroke patients treated in rural/underserved areas. These patients are being started on rtPA locally and transferred by helicopter to a tertiary center capable of performing rescue endovascular treatment and advance care (“drip and ship”). He has pioneer clinical trials in this setting performed by aeromedical crews (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2664255). He has also pioneered the development of an experimental helicopter platform where to test with fidelity the effect of helicopter transportation on an animal model of acute stroke with reperfusion with rtPA (http://stroke.ahajournals.org/content/46/Suppl_1/ATP235.short?rss=1&rela...).
